4.5 pounds per day.
That’s the amount of municipal solid waste generated per person in America, according to the latest numbers from the Environmental Protection Agency. Which comes out to more than 1,642 pounds a year for every man, woman and child in the U.S.
Kinda scary, right?
That totaled more than 267 million tons in 2017. Of that, the EPA study shows 94 million tons, or 35%, were recycled or composted.
We’re working to do our part here at Fork & Salad, using earth-friendlier items like mason jars, paper straws and compostable to-go containers. We also host beach cleanups here on Maui, a simple but meaningful way to make a difference to the ‘āina. And we are very happy to see more and more people taking their own positive steps, like bringing in reusable containers for takeout food and beverages! Director of Operations Lauren Mann shows us some examples in the video above.
So we encourage you to follow this very positive trend, and make health a priority…not only for you and your family, but for our home here on Mother Earth that we all share!! #EatLocalEatHealthy
