We Join Surfrider Maui & 170 Volunteers to Clean our Beaches!!

When you consider the numbers, it’s overwhelming.  Like…reports show the oceans contain 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris, or 46,000 pieces of plastic per every square mile of ocean. Microplastics, or small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long, are becoming more and more of a concern to not only the quality of our ocean, but the marine life who call it home.

A disturbing amount of microplastics end up on our shorelines here on Maui.  The sands around Kahului Harbor are littered with them, and that beach was the focus of our second cleanup event!

Fork & Salad sponsored a beach cleanup for the first time in October 2019, and we were so inspired by the volunteers and the difference they made in just a few short hours.  So we were simply stoked to partner with Surfrider Foundation, Maui Chapter for this beach cleanup event at Kahului Harbor on February 15th, which attracted a whopping 170 volunteers and collected 500 pounds of trash!  Volunteers even came on their vacations to help.  Surfrider provided giant sifters to help in collecting all those tiny microplastics, and some volunteers brought their own smaller sifters!  See the process and check out the staggering amount of debris that was gathered in our video above.

Surfrider Foundation not only helps our beaches, but also tracks water quality and builds awareness about ocean-friendly practices.  It’s a wonderful group, and we’re so happy to help bolster their efforts and provide some food for the hard-working volunteers!  Our terrific techs at Fork & Salad Kahului got chicken and eggplant wraps together for the first 50 volunteers who signed up!

We were all grateful to the State Dept. of Transportation Harbors Division; this awesome crew learned about the cleanup and arranged to pick up all the trash and haul it away; a tremendous help!

There are ways YOU can help on a daily basis.  Pick up the trash you see around you at the beach.  Dine-in with us and use our silverware and mason jars.   For takeout, bring reusable containers, as Director of Operations Lauren Mann shows us in this video!

As large and looming as those plastics stats may be, small steps can reach farther and farther, as more people get involved.  And “people” include kids, too, since a beach cleanup makes for a great weekend family activity!!  Thank you for helping to make a difference with us.   #EatLocalEatHealthy

Fork & Salad Welcomes YOU in Kahului!!

One of the best things about Central Maui is how, well, central it is, being accessible to and from so many parts of the island.  And “accessible” is a word we use when describing our mission:  to get farm-to-table cuisine into the hands (and mouths!) of more people, through convenience, affordability, quality products and local support.  Our Kahului eatery is going strong, after opening on June 1, 2018 at 120 Ho’okele Street #330 in the Pu‘unēnē Shopping Center.  We love this location, and are grateful to be surrounded by thriving neighbors like Target, Starbucks and Petco!!

As you’ll see in our video above, our June 1st grand opening featured a very moving Hawaiian blessing by Kimokeo Kapahulehua, and a meet-and-greet with supplier Kumu Farms.

Our newest locale spans 1,400 square feet, comfortably seating more than 20 guests in a state-of-the-art, custom-designed space. You’ll find step-by-step instructions built into our vibrant wall collage to help make ordering a snap!  You can enjoy the same healthy and fresh menu items available at the Azeka Mauka location in Kīhei, including build-your-own optionssignature salads, a range of sandwichesgluten-freeitems, kombucha on draft, and much more. Our new Kahului store also has the same hours, from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, and offers take-out and pick-up options via phone ordering or the free Fork & Salad mobile app.

Also in our video, you’ll hear a little about the vision for mainland expansion and exclusive partnership with Fransmart, the industry-leading franchise development company behind the success of household concepts like The Halal Guys and Five Guys Burgers & Fries.  Get more details on Fork & Salad franchise opportunities here.

However far this journey grows, we proudly remain a Maui-based concept, committed to serving and supporting the island’s kama‘āina and businesses. In fact, we employ roughly 40 island residents between our two Maui locations, and source over 50 local ingredients  from more than 25 farmers and suppliers based in Hawai’i.  So come visit our bustling Kahului location and check out our video for the story behind our expansion, and what’s to come!!  #EatLocalEatHealthy#EatHealthyThinkMaui

Maui County AgFest: A Look Back, a Look Forward

Maui County Agricultural Festival remains an inspiring event for us at Fork & Salad.  After all, we are a farm-to-table eatery with more than 25 local suppliers and producers!!  Known as “AgFest,” the big day is on the way Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The event takes some preparation on our part, so check out the video above to see our journey to AgFest from last year, and get a taste of what’s to come this year!

Admission is $5 at door or included with other ticket sales.  With interactive exhibits, a keiki zone, farmers’ market, Grand Taste dining event and more, the 11th-annual event is prime way to raise awareness about Maui’s agricultural industry.  It brings together farmers, educators, chefs and other supporters at Maui Tropical Plantation for a full day of fun events!  We’ll be there with our Fork & Salad booth and Three’s food truck, and we’re happy to help showcase ag’s vital role in the economy, environment, and lifestyle of Maui.  #EatLocalEatHealthy
